hCG Injections and Diet Protocol for Weight loss

If you are one of the nearly 50% of Americans trying to lose weight, you know how hard it can be. Studies suggest that close to 160 million Americans are overweight, and nearly 40% of adult Americans struggling with obesity. Amid these staggering numbers, more and more people are looking for solutions to help them regain their health, including medically supervised weight loss. One such popular diet theory is hCG injections and diet protocol.  Before running off to try this latest technique, it’s important to understand what hCG is and what the diet claims to do.

hCG is Human Chorionic Gonadotropin, a hormone that the body naturally produces during pregnancy. hCG is produced by cells that are formed in the placenta. The placenta is what nourishes the fertilized egg during pregnancy, delivering oxygen and nutrients to the growing baby. Some people believe that injecting hCG hormone while on a restricted calorie diet will help reset your metabolism and speed up weight loss.

The hCG Diet Protocol claims that restricting your diet to 500 to 800 calories per day and supplementing your program with injections of hCG can lead to a loss of one to two pounds of fat per day. The hCG diet program is conducted in four phases under the supervision of a certified practitioner.

Where Science and Myth Collide

There are numerous possible complications associated with the hCG Diet Protocol, so it is important to consider the basics. Anyone who severely restricts their caloric intake to as little as 500 calories per day is going to lose weight, but the loss is neither permanent nor sustainable. The human body simply cannot function properly on so few calories, and will go into protection mode by slowing your metabolism to protect and preserve basic organ function, like keeping your heart beating and your brain thinking.

The hCG Diet Protocol is not approved by the FDA for weight loss, although injections of hCG are not illegal. There is no science that backs up any claims that hCG impacts metabolism, nor is there any science that shows that it aids in weight loss.

Medically Supervised Weight Loss

Seeking the help of a licensed doctor or other trained professional to lose weight can help you achieve long term success. However, it is important to understand that losing weight using a combination of healthful eating, proper nutrition, and reasonable daily exercise is the only way to lose unwanted pounds and keep them off.  There are no magic pills or hormones that will make you a dieting success – only hard work, proper nutrition,  and commitment to a healthy lifestyle.
